Tips for scanning and blue line art?

Fri Nov 6, 2009, 8:20 PM
I have been working hard and practicing most every day since the Windy City Comicon and feel I am really getting the hang of inking, though I know I still have a long way to go. Currently, I am working on pencils by Marcus To, Reilly Brown, and others, and plan to scan and post some more work by Thanksgiving.

I am wondering if anyone has any tips for effective scanning for deviant submissions. When I look at the work I've posted so far, a lot of detail is lost, especially after zooming. Any tips you can share for clean scanning would be greatly appreciated. My method so far is piecing together 600 dpi scans of 11x17 pages in Photoshop, then reducing the res to 300 dpi and saving as a JPEG for posting.

Also, I have been downloading black and white pencil work and colorizing it in Photoshop to create blue line art to practice on, however, due to the thicker layer of toner where the darker pencils occur, the printed files have deep blue impressions that the ink beads upon, making it difficult to lay down the ink in one stroke. My monitor is old, so it's hard to make proper adjustments to the lightness. Does anyone have a standard setting that they use when colorizing for blue line?

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Cheers, and keep up the great work!

I am a 1998 BFA graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where I studied film, animation, and photography. I also spent two rigorous years at Columbus College of Art and Design as an Illustration major. I have been developing stories and characters since I was 12 years old. Sequential art, in all its forms (comics, film, animation, etc.), is my primary interest in art. My goal in the next year is to get a foothold in the comic book industry as an inker and then begin self-publishing my own work, as an artist/writer, in the next five years.

In photography, my primary concerns are with composition, light and shadow, color, and capturing the moment. All the photos I post are taken with a Pentax K1000 camera. As sophisticated as digital photography has become, it will never offer the challenge and reward of traditional photography.
